What is Zi Wei Dou Shu?
Zi Wei Dou Shu is a destiny-analysis system originating in ancient China. It uses a person’s birth hour, day, month, and year to generate a chart according to star-placement rules, thereby outlining an overall picture of life, relationships, and the rises and falls across each stage.

Every birth detail affects the chart
Zi Wei does not use only the birth year. The date, hour, time zone, gender, reading year, and method all contribute to generating the chart and reading luck cycles.
Birth date
Used to convert to the lunar calendar and determine Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, lunar date, and the basis for star placement.
Birth time
Determines the Life Palace, Body Palace, and many important stars, so a wrong hour can change the chart.
Time zone
Helps the system read the local time at the birthplace correctly, especially for births outside Vietnam.
Gender and reading year
Used to calculate the direction of luck cycles, annual limits, and yearly influences.

Origins and History
Zi Wei Dou Shu is traditionally associated with Chen Tuan of the Northern Song period and was later systematized over generations into classical writings. After entering Vietnam, the system continued to be annotated, its terminology Vietnamese-adapted, and developed into multiple interpretive schools.
The Chen Tuan tradition
Many classical sources associate the origin of Zi Wei Dou Shu with Chen Tuan, regarded as a foundational figure in the system of star placement and destiny interpretation based on birth data.
Systematized into texts
Rules concerning palaces, stars, the Bureau, the Four Transformations, and luck cycles were recorded, edited, and transmitted through many texts, with the title Complete Book becoming an important textual branch.
Transmission and Vietnamese adaptation
After entering Vietnam, Zi Wei Dou Shu was interpreted using more familiar terminology, forming distinct schools and interpretive approaches alongside the classical Complete Book system.
The Structure of the 12 Palaces in the Chart
The twelve palaces form the main framework of the chart. Each palace represents an aspect of life and should be examined together with the Three Directions and Four Cardinals, resident stars, converging stars, and luck cycles.
The first palace considered in chart reading, reflecting core temperament and personal tendencies.
Shows the relationship with parents, support from benefactors, and the family foundation in life.
Covers inherited fortune, inner life, lineage, and long-term mental stability.
Represents homes, land, living environment, and fixed assets.

Covers the outside environment, travel, social relations, and changes away from familiar ground.

Shows romance, marriage, the spouse, and how committed relationships operate.

How the Chart Is Generated
An accurate chart must be built through a consistent sequence. A single error in the input or method can misalign the palaces, stars, and subsequent luck calculations.
Set the Life Palace and Body Palace from the lunar birth month and birth hour.
Arrange the 12 palaces in fixed order to form the chart frame.
Calculate the Five Element Bureau as the basis for placing Zi Wei.
Place Zi Wei, Tian Fu, and the main stars according to the selected system.
Add auxiliary stars, malefic stars, Four Transformations, Chang Sheng cycle, Tai Sui cycle, and luck periods.
Read the chart through trines and oppositions, brightness states, luck cycles, and real-life context.
Star System
Major stars form the structural pattern. Auxiliary stars, malefic stars, the Four Transformations, and star cycles add degrees of auspiciousness or adversity, support, obstruction, or change.
